What is the difference between crane hire and contract lift?
Contract lift is a comprehensive service whereby Pro-lift manage all aspects of your lifting requirements from planning to carrying out the job. Following a thorough site visit, Pro-lift’s Appointed Person will provide an in-depth method statement detailing a description of work to be undertaken and a site plan specifying crane position. Pro-lift determines which equipment is best suited to your requirements and provides a full risk assessment in accordance with current legislation. Pro-lift’s highly skilled team of our appointed person/ crane supervisor and slinger/ signaller will all be on hand to ensure your project is completed smoothly in a safe and efficient manner; our team operate within the codes of practice endorsed by the CPA. All with the added peace of mind of operating under Pro-lift’s insurance. Where necessary we will contact local authorities to arrange road closures and/ or parking restrictions.
Crane hire is a more straightforward service aimed at experienced crane users, whereby Pro-lift provide a crane and competent crane operator to work in accordance with your instructions. It is the customer’s responsibility to provide an appointed person to plan the lift, prepare the method statement and undertake risk assessments. The customer is responsible for the insurance, equipment and personnel.
What is the minimum hire period for a crane?
The minimum hire period is usually one day, however at Pro-lift we offer single lift, half day and full day hire. Helping keep your crane hire needs affordable.
Do I need insurance?
‘Hired in plant’ insurance is required for loss or damage to the equipment is the lift is performed under crane hire terms, even though it is driven by a Pro-lift driver. The policy should cover the cost of replacing the crane plus the loss of earnings we suffer if the equipment is being repaired or replaced. Third-party liability insurance should also be obtained. Contract lift conditions require general insurance to be held covering our indemnity. Please refer to CPA terms and conditions for more info. Indemnity is covered by Pro-lift’s insurance, with goods being lifted covered by our public and employers’ liability.
What standards are your workforce trained to?
Pro-lift’s highly skilled workforce is certified under the CPCS (Construction Plant Competency Scheme), the industry standard qualification in the UK.
How good is your safety record?
At Pro-lift safety is of the upmost importance; we have an outstanding record. Our qualified operatives are trained to cease a job at any time if they believe safety is being compromised.
What is an appointed person?
An appointed person is responsible for planning the lifting operations and writing the method statement and risk assessment. Health and safety legislation stipulate a ‘competent person’ should be appointed. If an organisation doesn’t have a competent person, contract lift hire would be the most appropriate service to opt for.
Do I need to provide anything on the day of hire?
Providing we are informed as to the nature of the lift we will bring all the necessary apparatus to ensure your project is carried out efficiently. All cranes carry a selection of slings, chains and shackles however more complex lifts may incur additional charges. We can provide additional equipment where required to include pallet forks, man baskets, spreader beams, block grabs and muck or concrete skips; please get in touch for a quote.
If opting for crane hire, it’s required by the Health and Safety Work Act under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 for you to provide the driver with a risk assessment, method statement and berthing study before he can undertake any work. Failure to provide these documents will result in the work being abandoned and hire charges will still be applicable. If you don’t have a ‘competent’ appointed person to produce these documents, opt for a contract lift service whereby Pro-lift take responsibility for the lift.
